Did you know that indoor air quality can be a bigger indicator of health than outdoor air quality? Since adults spend more and more time inside every year, bad air quality indoors can take a serious toll on your health. That being said, determining whether or not your indoor air quality is “bad” is another thing! How can you determine whether or not your workplace, business, or home has bad air quality?
Monitor Your Allergies
While allergies could be due to outdoor pollutants and seasonal changes, indoor allergies are an indicator that you could have an indoor air quality issue. Indoor allergies can show themselves in symptoms like coughing, watery or itchy eyes, sneezing, headaches, bloody noses, and constant congestion. If you notice these symptoms appear, you should monitor when they appear and when they go away. If they start when you walk in the door at the end of the day and leave when you go to the office the next morning, it’s probably something inside your home.
Pay Attention to Your Lungs
If you use chemicals to clean your home, even just in the bathroom and kitchen, it can have a negative effect on your lungs quickly and potentially lead to very negative health conditions. If you often have bronchitis or cold-like symptoms, it might be a result of the airborne particles floating around inside of your home or office. Using greener cleaning products and running the exhaust fans when you clean can make a big difference.
HVAC Inspections Matter
Are you having regular HVAC maintenance performed? If the answer is “no,” then you could be making yourself sick as a result! Regular air filter changes are crucial to not clog up your system and potentially recirculate airborne bacteria, viruses, and debris through your system. You should also have your ducts vacuumed on an annual basis to get rid of trapped lint, dust, and debris. Every time you kick on the air conditioning, anything lining your ducts will be circulated around your home.
