How to Tell Your Heating System is Failing

How to Tell Your Heating System is Failing

Here are signs that your heating system is starting to fail you.

While there are still a few more weeks of summer to enjoy, we’ll soon be reaching a point when the weather will cool down, and it’ll be time to start using our home’s heating systems once again. You want your heating system ready ahead of any upcoming chilly weather, and that means you need to know whenever it’s on the decline. Here are signs that your heating system is starting to fail you.

Health Issues (Such as Nausea and Headaches)

If the people in your home are experiencing these types of symptoms, it could be a sign of a serious danger: carbon monoxide. You should get your house tested to see if there is a carbon monoxide leak in the vicinity. You can often find carbon monoxide monitors at hardware stores, and the sooner you can identify a carbon monoxide leak, the better.

Different Rooms Have Vastly Different Temperatures

If you have a zoned heating system, this might not be a concern for you. Standard heating systems, on the other hand, should be heating the different rooms of your house evenly. While slight changes in temperature from one room to the next can be understandable, you shouldn’t experience any drastic temperature changes throughout the different rooms of your home. If you do experience this issue, you should have an HVAC professional come by to inspect your heating system.

You Notice Unusual Noises

Odd sounds are a telltale sign of issues with many aspects of your home, and the same goes for your home’s heating system. Depending on the sound you hear, it could indicate a different problem.

You might hear squealing noises, which could indicate that there are problems with your pulley or that the bearings are loose. If you hear an odd humming noise, the blower fan motor might be on the decline. Other times, you might hear rattling going on, which could be a sign that there are loose screws, or you have an unbalanced motor.

You never want to ignore issues like these. They don’t stop by themselves. Instead, get professional help diagnosing and resolving whatever issue(s) your heating system may have.
