Furnace Questions: How to Deal with an Emergency Situation

With temperatures starting to dip into freezing territory overnight, you’ll want to make sure that your heating system is in good condition. That’s why you need professional HVAC technicians to install, test, and maintain your furnace.

The turn of the month occurs this week. November has finally turned into December, and at last, this long and strange year is almost over. With temperatures starting to dip into freezing territory overnight, you’ll want to make sure that your heating system is in good condition. That’s why you need professional HVAC technicians to install, test, and maintain your furnace. After all, you never know when you might need emergency repairs, and in some cases, it could already be too late.

Persistent Electrical Issues

First of all, electrical issues can be a headache. For one thing, you need a steady stream of electricity. Your heating and cooling systems also need electricity so it might be a good idea to invest in a backup generator if you don’t already have one. Do your lights tend to flicker whenever the furnace kicks on? Then this is a sign that something is very wrong; an electrical hazard is no laughing matter. If you are not qualified to perform the repairs yourself, then don’t even try. Instead, keep a professional on-call for whenever the furnace finally gives out.

Weird Noises That Keep Getting Louder

Even if your furnace is in decent condition, you might be fooled into thinking it isn’t because of the persistently loud noises that it keeps making. For instance, odd pinging or popping noises are caused by thermal expansion – where the ductwork expands and contracts as temperatures change.

It Continually Cycles On and Off

Your thermostat connects to the HVAC system as a whole, and in general, helps you control the operating temperature of the furnace. Rapid cycling can be blamed on dirty filters, faulty blower motors, or the internal belts. Every component matters.

You Begin to Smell Sulfur

No one likes the smell of rotten eggs, and if you detect sulfur, then that’s also a really bad sign. After all, it could be a gas leak – and that means you and everyone else needs to leave right away. Did you know that it’s actually the smell of mercaptan that gets your attention? Without it, you wouldn’t be able to see or smell natural gas in its unaltered state.
