Keeping your home’s HVAC unit as efficiently as possible isn’t difficult, but when there are pets in your home it does require a little extra TLC. Here are some ways to make sure your HVAC system stays clean when you live with pets.
Change the Filters often
If there’s any sort of issue with your HVAC, such as air not getting cold or the unit making a strange noise. When your pets shed, the hair is released into your home. All that loose hair clogs up the filter much faster than in a home without furry friends. Keeping HVAC filters clean allows them to keep the air in your home cleaner, reducing allergens that can be harmful to you and your family.
Keep Your Home Clean
You should also keep your home as clean as you can. Dust can clog up a filter just as quickly as most other things. If your home is dusty, the dust will get circulated around and around until the filter finally catches it.
Clean the Ducts
If you notice a peculiar smell in your home, especially when the HVAC system is turned on, there could be something going on with the ducts somewhere behind the walls. Consult your HVAC technician on how to move forward – especially if they may need to perform an inspection to root out problems. Ductwork should be cleaned by a professional every couple of years to maximize efficiency.
Put Up a Fence
Your HVAC system most likely has a compressor somewhere outside your home, usually close to the house. Erecting a fence or other type of structure around the outdoor unit can help it last longer and function better. Sometimes dogs can get a little wild when playing outside, especially if someone is playing with them. A barrier around the unit will protect it from any flying toys, kids, or dogs.
