It takes a surprising number of moving, functional parts to ensure your home stays comfortable throughout whatever Mother Nature has in store. Understanding a little more about the duties some of these parts perform can help you to prevent any issues that may arise in your HVAC system. If something does go awry, you can at least try to point your HVAC technician in the right direction!
Thermostat
The thermostat is the part of the HVAC system that assesses the temperature in your home and activates the rest of the system when the air is too warm or too cold. It’s the only part you interact with regularly, except maybe the filter. There are many different types of thermostats available, so talk to your HVAC technician about finding one that will fit your preferences.
Fan Motor
Once the air that has entered the HVAC system has been heated or cooled, it needs to be pushed through the ductwork. That’s where the fan motor comes in. As the air reaches the desired temperature, the fan circulates it through the air ducts to heat or cool your home.
Compressor or Condenser Coil
The compressor is a part of the system that you probably see outside homes everywhere even if you don’t realize it. The large-ish piece of metal machinery that is humming away in the backyard is the compressor. It contains refrigerant that is used to cool the air inside your home. It releases hot air outside while simultaneously compressing the warm gas of the refrigerant into a cool liquid. Make sure that your compressor is always clear of sticks, leaves, and other outside debris in order to prevent any issues that may arise from being outside.
