We are feeling the summer heat here in Maryland. Whether it’s the dead heat of summer or the frigid cold of winter, there are a number of factors that can affect the performance of your HVAC system. Keep your HVAC running at peak performance all year long by paying attention to these key factors!
Insulation
When you’re running your HVAC system, the point is to heat or cool the air inside to a more comfortable temperature. Proper insulation is an essential part of allowing the system to function efficiently. This means that the walls of your home or office building should be well insulated, as well as the ductwork itself. This way the HVAC system won’t have to work as hard to heat or cool the air.
Humidity
Humidity also plays a significant role in HVAC efficiency, particularly in the summer time. Here on the East Coast, we are no strangers to that summer humidity. Your air conditioner should be able to remove the humidity from the air to get it cooled off. However, if humidity levels rise past a certain point, it will be far less effective. Higher humidity levels can make the air feel warmer despite the actual temperature. On super humid days, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to add a dehumidifier to assist the air conditioner.
Inadequate Sealing
Similar to insulation, sealing also helps to block outside air from coming in. Even the smallest cracks in or around windows, doors, pipes, or wiring can let in the outside air and decrease HVAC efficiency. If you’ve been noticing a decrease in efficiency, make sure all openings to the outside are thoroughly sealed.
