Fall is in full swing, and that means allergy season is worse than ever. Did you know that your residential HVAC system could be filling your home with dust and allergens? Here are some ways you can combat it.
Use Traps
Take a look at the filter attached to your home’s HVAC system. If it’s too dirty, it forces the system to work harder to push air around your home. Take some time every month to clean out the filters and replace them if necessary. It’s possible that your home is just especially dusty, which can happen if you have several pets or an older home. If that’s the case, you’ll need to change the filters more often. The more dust there is on the filter, the less dust there is in the air of your home. Even so, it can be unsettling to pull out the filter and see it has been clogged for awhile.
Stop Leaks
Your home also has ductwork hidden behind the walls. This ductwork is the pathway for the air to move throughout your house. Leaks are more common in basements and attics, where there is a bound to be a lot more dust than in areas that you spend most of your time in, such as the kitchen or the bedroom. Look for any leaks in your ducts that you can find and have them patched right away.
Prevent Dry Conditions
Your house can easily dry out during the fall and winter. To fight this, set up a humidifier. Dry air can be just as problematic as wet air, but dry air can also create more dust. That means that your filters and your HVAC system could be overwhelmed more quickly. Do what you can to prevent dry conditions, and your home will be much less dusty!
